The first invasion
At February 14th 1979, 3 days after the Islamic revolution, an armed Marxist and leftist group attacked the US embassy. After 2 hours it was solved with the presence of Ibrahim Yazdi, secretary of state and the
help of the army.
The second occupation
On October 22th 1979 The US allowed the Shah to enter it's soil and Muslim Students of the Imam Khomeini's Line concluded that
attacking the embassy is the best respond to it.
Bazargan
The most important event after occupying the US embassy was the resignation of Bazargan administration.

At the day of the attack 6 American diplomats could escape and got out of Iran in January 28th 1980 with the help of CIA and the Canadian embassy. Argo was made based on this story by Ben Affleck.

The US tried to free the hostages with the operation eagle claw but the operation was hit by a sandstorm and got defeated.
The impact of the occupation
8 days after the attack the first US sanctions against Iran began. The US cut off oil purchases from Iran and blocked Iranian property on it's soil.
